What perks would we have with this amazing position? Where would we take vacations? Could they still live at the same house? Their inquisitive minds wanted to know all the many details that made being the President worth while. After telling them all the cool facts I could recall about living in the White House, traveling on Air Force One, and having a Secret Security detail, I proceeded to also give them a reality check with some of the many responsibilities of the position they were so curious about. Time spent away from family, people who would not like you, probably because of the decisions you made – even if you thought they were the best choices. . .the list went on.
All too often I think we like to see the more glamorous side that our many elected officials experience but we tend to forget about all the sacrifices they also have to endure. While we may not agree with all the decisions that are made or even the person who is making those decisions, we are called by God to pray for our leaders in 1 Timothy 2:2,
“Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.” (NLT)
Now, I know that halfway through an election year where it seems that everyone has a divisive opinion, many of us feel the call to pray for the new leaders that are about to be chosen. But I want to remind us to also pray for our current leaders who are still working on our behalf, to pray for each other as a nation and to teach our children to do the same. Remember, we never know if we are raising a future President of the United States, member of the school board, or mayor of a city.
Teaching our children to respect and pray for our leadership very well may shape the kind of future leaders we are raising. I for one cannot wait to see how God will continue to bless our nation when our children are ready to show the world what kind of people they were raised to be. As you celebrate our freedom this week, take a few moments to pray this prayer for our leaders with your children.
A Prayer for Our Leaders:
Dear God, Thank you for the beautiful country we have the privilege to call home. We ask that you would be with our leaders – the men and women in office today and the ones who will be chosen this election year. Give them wisdom to know what to do in every situation. Bring peace and unity on issues that have caused conflict. Even if they don’t know you God, may the leaders who are trying to do what’s best for all people, be guided by the light of your truth. Thank you for the freedom we enjoy, most of all, the freedom that comes with knowing you. In Jesus name, Amen.
YOUR TURN!
How have you been discussing or praying for our country and this election year with your kids?
