reading the Bible from Genesis to Jesus’ birth each year as a way to understand why and how Jesus came to us on Christmas. I start with Creation, sharing that this miraculous beginning was also the “once upon a time” of their lives. We move our way through the Old Testament and big Bible moments they are already familiar with, connecting the dots between them until we get to the very reason we celebrate Christmas. And now, each year as we follow this tradition, we tell the story of Jesus’ birth as if it were a huge moment in their own story. Because it is. Without this incredible chapter in the history of our faith, we wouldn’t have the joy and peace and hope we have today. Our story would be incredibly sad without the hope of Christ; a tiny baby; the son of God, and his miraculous entrance into our world. Because of Jesus, we know the love of God. Because of Jesus, we understand how to live and love well. Because of Jesus, we have the strength to endure the pain and suffering we experience here on earth. Because of Jesus, we have the hope of eternity. Jesus is our story. He is a part of every aspect of our past, present, and future. So I want my children to understand the significance this season holds for their life: Your story has a beginning, a hope-filled journey, and a joyous end because of Jesus.
This year, as you share the story of Christmas with your children (no matter their age) tell it as their epic, God-story to help them understand that Jesus had their name written on his heart when he entered this world as our Savior, when he left it, fulling God’s rescue plan and even now, as he is seated in the heavenly realm with our Father, God. May this connection bring joy to their hearts (and yours) this holiday season.
And this is [our story], that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life. . . -1 John 5:11 (adapted)
