This is painful, but it’s not insurmountable. During one particularly difficult season in my life, I had experienced five miscarriages; I constantly felt like I was grasping for answers that weren’t there. I looked at God’s promises over and over, but honestly, they felt like they were written for someone else. Surely something must’ve been wrong because if I opened God’s Word, shouldn’t I have felt closer to God? It was during this extremely challenging time when I learned one of the most valuable lessons about the distance between God and me: The space gets wider as I pursue the solution more than the Savior. Most of us are looking for an answer. We want to know why and we want to know-how. So how do we draw near to God without specific instructions? Here are three practical steps to consider when God feels far away:
- Press pause on the passion. This might sound odd, but this is key. God tends to feel far when we have lost something we feel passionate about. Perhaps you have lost a loved one, lost a job, got in an argument, or life took an unwanted turn. Press pause on this. Mentally, stop asking God why. You don’t have to figure it out right now. While you pause, seek His peace. Let that peace take the place of whatever you were passionate about. Let the peace of Christ rule in your heart. (Col 3:15) That means follow the peace. Don’t follow your passion- at least not right now and at least not until your passion and Christ’s peace meet again.
- Let love sweep away indifference. I am mostly indifferent when I have become calloused to sin in my life. Sometimes I get lazy and ignore it. As I do that, I drift out into a sea of hard-heartedness slowly and dangerously. 1 John 5:3 tells us that we love God by keeping his commands. With every wave of obedience, I find myself coming in closer and closer toward the shore of Christ.
- Pursue the prize. When you open God’s Word, do not pursue the answers to your problems, pursue the person of Christ. You were designed to know Him. Don’t let yourself desire the healing more than the Healer. Don’t desire to be right, or to understand a situation you just can’t understand. Spend time getting to know Jesus’ character. Why is he mighty? Why is he faithful? Why is he victorious? Why is he wise? Why is his love eternal? This will change everything.
Dear friend, the truth is there are no fast ways to solve pain, disappointment, and distance. There is just Jesus- our Savior, our true solution, our never-dormant, and always a faithful friend who is most passionate about you. Keep drawing near to Him. Keep listening. He’s right here.
