But how do you teach them that God is always near when you can’t physically see him or audibly hear him? Communication is so key as a parent. It is through sweet talks with my children that I learn their desires, interests, and personalities. They know that I love them based on my genuine desire to hear them! I want to know their hearts… just as God wants to know ours! I
f we pray with our children daily, (not just “thank you for this food, Amen”), they hear the way we talk with God and know that He is real. We talk with God like we talk with our children. We tell him about our day. Praise him for who he is. Ask him for help. Our children will hear the way we talk with God and if we make if personal, they will realize he is near!
Romans 1:20 says, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made.” The Bible is telling us that we can KNOW that God is near based on what he has made! By looking around you and seeing this beautiful creation, you can teach your children the nearness of God.
On a windy day, you can point out the wind and show your children what God is DOING. When your child hands you a little dandelion they picked just for you, exclaim “Oh thank you! God made us such a beautiful flower!” Continually pointing your children back to God will cause them to see HIM in everything around them! What about those hard times when God seems so very far away? How do you teach your children that God is near when their hearts are so full of hurt they feel like they can burst?
Children learn through YOUR actions as a parent. How YOU react to difficult situations will be the truest “test” of the nearness of God. When your family experiences a tragedy, do you pray with your children for peace? Do they see you reading your Bible for comfort? Do they see you praising God despite the difficult circumstances? If YOU cling to God and feel his presence, your children will feel it too!! I love to read with my children, so if you are like me and would like a book to help teach your children that God is always near, check out God I know You’re There by Bonnie Rickner Jensen.I love having books that are written so that they can understand. It takes a lot of guesswork away from me as a parent when trying to teach. Having these examples on hand are key!
If YOU live like God is near and continually point everything back to God, your children will feel his very real presence and know that he is right by their side wherever they go! How awesome is that!
