A few years ago in our little homeschool, we decided to do a study on God’s creatures. We spent one semester learning about land animals and the next learning about the sea and air creatures. It was kind of a quick decision. I needed a science class and these books were available. It turned into a huge shift in our focus and was a blessing that I will always be thankful for.
How, we wondered, did we never think about the magnificence of these animals before?! We couldn’t believe how many teeny details there were to learn about something as simple as a bird’s feathers. Or how amazing it is that underwater animals get oxygen. After we did our lessons we did arts and crafts and went on nature walks. We had to force ourselves to stop studying one animal so we would have time to learn about the next. Creation is so incredible that there is no denying it…..only God could have done this. We enjoyed it so much that we are going to do it all again. You can never stop learning about God’s amazing creatures. The information is endless!
I have seen my kids develop a deeper desire to study more about how God created the animals since we studied them. From land to sea to air, animals are an important piece of the structure of our world. We need them to eat the plants and breathe the air and spread the pollen and fertilize our gardens. They serve a great purpose for our survival and for our enjoyment.
A trip to the zoo or aquarium is a fantastic way to experience animals that don’t live in our part of the world. But reading can also take your family on an animal adventure! Louie Giglio’s new book, “Indescribable: 100 Devotions About God and Science” is a great way to share tidbits of the awesomeness of God. Then, as you learn, go further on topics the book covers! If your child loves a bit of info about sloths from the book, go on a sloth information hunt. Try to make most of your discovery offline so that you can be looking up and out and not into your devices. When we were studying all of the animals, my boys got particularly interested in dolphins. I find them absolutely stunning, so I took that as a window of opportunity to really dig into learning more about dolphins, ending with a trip to a dolphin bay about 4 hours away, where we could get up close and personal with the dolphins.
My kids will be forever changed by what we learned and have a greater appreciation for this world God has made. They see the world as a place full of wonder and excitement. I, too, have a deeper love for the animals and how each little part of their existence is a miracle. He made it all work so perfectly that we can’t help but be amazed! It’s indescribable!
