But for many, Christmas contains the reminders of a painful, desperate childhood, a loved one fighting disease, or family members who have graduated to heaven. Maybe for you, the joyful moments are overcast by current desperate circumstances and your heart is aching despite the festivities and twinkling lights of the season. Perhaps your children are dealing with situations far beyond your control.
The gifts of God’s grace and mercy are evident every day of the year, but especially at Christmas.
Though the sweetness of the moments may include sorrow, suffering, or heartache, God is ever-present. His listening ear is always attentive to his children and he longs to listen to the cries of our souls. If this Christmas season consists of difficult moments for you and your loved ones, feel free to embrace this Christmas prayer for hurting hearts as your own.
Dear God, As I think about the Christmas season, I can’t wrap my mind around your love for the world. Yet like Adam and Eve who sewed fig leaves together, here I am, centuries later, trying to use tape and tissue paper to cover up sorrow and hurt. As I stare at the twinkling lights of the tree, I’m struggling to wrap my heart around your grace for all mankind. Yet like Saul whose name was changed forever, here I am, years later, tempted to treat religious action more pursuit-worthy than your mercy. As I turn my eyes to the Babe in a manager, I’m unable to wrap my soul around your passion for me. Yet like Mary who pondered all things in her heart, here I am, in this moment, recognizing I have all I need if I unwrap the gifts you’ve graciously provided. Thank you for the love that covers, the grace that changes, the passion that pursues my hurting heart. Just as you provided your big gift of love all those years ago, wrapped tattered and small and delivered in the most humble way, I trust you’ll provide the grace and healing I desperately need this Christmas season. In the name of the Gift who makes all things new, Amen. May the love of Jesus heal your heart and light your way this season.
